I had a comforter set that I received as a gift before. I had it stored in the utility room for several years without even opening the packaging. This time, I got to use the comforter. First, I had to open the packaging and wash it once. My washing machine at home broke down, so I went to a nearby coin laundry. The neighborhood coin laundry has been open for about two years. Before that, there was a chicken restaurant, but business wasn’t good. It closed for a while, renovated the interior, and then opened as a coin laundry. 

I started using the coin laundry a year ago. I did small laundry at home, and I used the coin laundry for large laundry. It was because my washing machine at home broke down. Then why didn’t I buy a washing machine for a year? I was planning to move. So I was spent thinking that I would buy a new washing machine when I moved, but it’s been over a year. It’s the same now. I’ll buy a washing machine after I move.

After lunch, I washed my blanket at the coin laundry. Instead of drying it, I brought it home and hung it on the indoor drying rack. Since it is dry in the winter, it also acts as a humidifier. 

I read an article about coin laundries before. Coin laundries were originally a convenience for people who could not afford to buy a washing machine at home. People who could not afford a washing machine because they had no money or had limited space in their homes used them. That is how I am now. 

The first coin laundries appeared in Texas in 1934. They began as the Great Depression caused an increase in the number of households that could not afford to buy washing machines. At that time, coins were not used, but instead, they had to pay a resident attendant. There were no dryers, so they had to take their wet laundry home to dry. The modern coin laundries began in New York in 1957. Coin payments became possible, and this led to the 24-hour operation. This convenience greatly increased the popularity of coin laundries. 

Coin laundries were an innovative idea that provided laundry services to people who could not afford to buy washing machines. Unmanned, 24-hour operation. And this service-using lifestyle has become a culture and is shown in various ways in novels and movies.  

As single-person households increase, the demand for coin laundries has begun to increase. Considering efficiency and lifestyle, coin laundries will become a convenient facility that plays an important role in busy modern life.

I looked up the weather forecast before the Lunar New Year holiday and it said there would be heavy snow during the holiday. The temperature would also drop after the snow falls. I was a little worried about going to Gyeonggi-do from the countryside to celebrate the holiday. Should I drive up when it snows or avoid the heavy snow and cold? So I decided to go before the holiday started. 

I went up before the holiday and came back before the holiday started. There was no traffic and it was quiet. Then the holiday started. Heavy snow advisories and warnings continued and heavy snow fell. Accidents occurred all over the road. Unlike previous years, it snowed a lot during the Lunar New Year holiday. 

The snowfall in my area was so severe that buses couldn't run because of the snow. I got a safety disaster text message saying that buses in the outskirts were not running. Oh my god.

I cleared the snow from the apartment parking lot. There is too much snow for the manager to clear alone. Some residents cleared the snow in the morning and afternoon, and I also helped out. It has been a long time since I have cleared snow. The snow is falling more than the amount cleared. I need to call someone.

I have a short video that I uploaded on YouTube before, and today it reached 1,000 views. The video is about 1 minute and 30 seconds long. People say that views are important to YouTubers, but I don't care if 1,000 views is a lot or a little. I'm just grateful that my video is not dead and is being played steadily on YouTube. 1,000 views will become 2,000, and more. Then, a great video will come out. I haven't made money from YouTube yet, so it's a bit awkward to call myself a 'YouTuber'. I'm proud that my YouTube channel, which I started for fun, is piling up videos one by one. Of course, it's fun.

집 앞에 대형 교회가 하나 있다. 교회의 한쪽 면 경사지에 나무가 많아서 봄부터 여름까지 꽃이 만개한다. 그 풍경이 볼만하다. 겨울이면 크리스마스와 연말 무렵에 조명을 설치한다. 한적한 도심 외곽의 주거지역에 볼거리를 제공한다. 거창하거나 화려하지 않지만, 작은 규모의 조명으로 알찬 효과를 낸다. 한 해의 끝자락과 새해의 마중을 조명과 함께 한다.

[조명] 공주 회랑 – 공산성 앞 제민천 왕릉교에 세워진 회랑. 

공산성에서 송산리고분군 쪽으로 향하면 제민천 왕릉교를 만난다. 공주시는 2020년에 왕릉교 양쪽 인도에 회랑을 지었다. 정면 11칸, 측면 1칸 규모의 한식 회랑이다. 야간 조명도 설치했다. 

역사 도시를 표방하는 지자체들은 역사성을 고려한 랜드마크를 만들려고 하는데, 공주시는 특별한 것이 없었다. 왕릉교 리모델링 사업의 일환으로 회랑을 만들었고, 공주의 대표적인 랜드마크가 되었다.

한낮보다는 야간경치가 보기 좋다. 비 오는 날 운치가 있다. 한여름 뙤약볕도 피할 수 있다. 밖은 더워도 안쪽은 바람이 분다.

스페인 바로셀로나의 매력을 책 한 권으로 – 열정이 번지는 곳 스페인

건축가 가우디, 소설가 세르반테스, 화가 피카소. 그 외에도 스페인을 대표하는 인물이 많다. 역사와 전통, 문화 등 다양한 매력을 지닌 나라 스페인. 세계적인 관광지로 인기 있는 스페인의 모습을 많은 사진으로 보여준다.

‘쉼’ 출판사의 In the Blue 시리즈를 좋아한다. 그전까지 대부분의 여행 서적이 정보 위주로 마치 전화번호부처럼 빽빽이 관광지의 정보를 적었다면, 이 시리즈의 책은 많은 사진과 짧은 감상 위주로 구성을 해서 편안히 읽을 수 있었다. 사진 자료와 유럽은 특히 잘 어울리는 것 같다. 책을 보면 대리 여행의 느낌이다. 여행 가고픈 마음이 든다.

스페인, 하면 떠오르는 인물이 있다. 건축가 가우디, 소설가 세르반테스, 화가 피카소가 그렇다. 스페인 여행을 다녀온 사람들의 여정을 들여다보면 이들과 관계된 장소가 많다. 말로만 듣던 장소, 건축물을 사진으로 보며 훗날의 여행을 기약한다.

스페인의 여러 도시 중에서 저자는 ‘바르셀로나’부터 시작한다. 바르셀로나는 가우디의 ‘열정’과 ‘꿈’이 가득한 도시다. ‘바르셀로나 = 가우디’의 등식이 전혀 무리가 아니다. 천재 건축가 한 명이 도시를 바꾼다. 

거대한 도시 바르셀로나를 조망하기에 좋은 장소가 몇 군데 있다. 몬주익 언덕, 구엘 공원, 그리고 성 가족 교회(사그라다 파밀리아)다. 특히 구엘 공원은 지중해의 풍광, 가우디의 건축물과 도시를 한눈에 바라볼 수 있다. 도시와 건축물과 거리의 아름다움을 느낄 수 있다.

     공사는 아직도 진행 중이다. 하나의 도시를 재창조한 건축가 가우디의 열정이 백 년이 지난 오늘도 이어지고 있다. 건물을 짓기 시작한 건축가는 이제 이 세상에 없지만, 그의 건물은 아직 살아 움직이고 있다. 백이십여 년 전 한 건축가가 지어 올리기 시작한 건물은, 도시 바르셀로나 한가운데 우뚝 서서 도시를 상징하고 도시의 가장 큰 의미를 세상에 알리고 있다. 누구도 예상하지 못했으며, 누구도 기대하지 않았고, 누구도 상상할 수 없었던 건물은 아직도 만들어지고 있다.

“언제 이 성당의 완성된 모습을 볼 수 있습니까?”

“이 성당 건축의 의뢰인은 하나님이신데 그분은 무척 가난하십니다. 하지만 그분은 영생하는 분이시니 바쁜 분이 아닙니다. 쉬엄쉬엄 지어도 큰 문제는 없지요.”

성당의 외벽들은 예수의 탄생과 죽음, 그리고 부활이라는 세 가지 주제로 나뉘어 조각되어 있다. 동쪽에 ‘탄생의 파사드(Nativity facade)’, 남쪽에 ‘영광의 파사드(Glory facade)’, 그리고 서쪽엔 ‘수난의 파사드(Passion facade)’가 있다. 각 파사드(집의 정면)마다 믿음, 소망, 사랑을 의미하는 세 개의 문이 있고, 그 위에는 두 개씩 짝을 이룬 네 개의 탑을 세웠다. 모두 12개의 탑이 세워지는데 이것은 예수의 12명의 제자를 상징한다. 이중 ‘탄생의 파사드’는 가우디가 생전에 유일하게 대부분을 완성시킨 것이다. 아기 예수의 탄생부터 유년시절까지 조각되어 있다.

바르셀로나 시가지 한쪽에는 사그라다 파밀리아 성당의 웅장한 모습이, 다른 쪽에는 독특한 형태의 ‘총알 빌딩’이 서 있다. 책 표지에 그림으로 담은 정경이다. 말이 필요 없다. 그 너머로 푸른 지중해가 보인다. 아름답고 평화롭다.

어느 계절을 좋아하느냐는 질문은 어렵고 아쉽다. 이 계절을 고르면 다른 계절이 생각나기 때문이다. 봄엔 봄이 좋고, 여름엔 여름이, 가을엔 가을이, 또 겨울엔 겨울이 제일 좋은 계절이다. 모든 계절이 다 아름답다. 계절이 돌아왔을 때 그 계절의 멋을 제대로 느끼지 못하고 시간을 보낸다면 그것만큼 안타까운 일이 또 있겠는가. 

이번 가을에 내게 있었던 특별한 일이 무엇이 있었나, 하고 돌아보면 아쉽게도 별일이 없었다. 크고 작은 사건, 사고가 없으면 다행이다. 그래도 기억에 남을 뭔가가 있었으면 좋겠는데 딱히 떠오르는 게 없다. 그게 제일 아쉽다. 인생의 어느 한 계절이 그냥 사라진 것 같기 때문이다. 

생각을 바꿔보니, 가을에 물든 단풍과 가을꽃을 보았으니 전혀 무의미한 시간은 아니었다. 이번 가을은 작년 가을과 다르고 내년 가을과 다를 것이다. 같은 풍경을 보고 작년과 올해가 다름을 느낀다면 그것으로 충분하다. 내년의 단풍과 코스모스와 감나무의 감을 기대할 수 있기 때문이다. 행복이 별거인가. 다음을 기약할 수 있으면 그것이 행복이지. 내년에도 나는 코스모스 군락지에서 사진을 찍을 것이고, 감나무의 감을 보며 배불러 할 것이고, 단풍과 낙엽을 보며 겨울을 맞이할 것이다.
